Ellis arrived in the field at the same time as Frank Whiting and T.G.G. Ellis, they were probably acquainted. Both Pte. G.C. and Pte. T.G.G. Ellis were wounded at Sanctuary Wood on 2 June 1916, but G.C. Ellis, who was struck off strength on 9 June 1916, survived.
