Prof. S. Carson Lee

Lee, Prof. S. Carson, M.A., Professor of Applied Physics, 307 Chemistry and Physics Building.

Carson Lee, formerly principal of Portage la Prairie Collegiate, become Professor of Applied Physics at the Manitoba Agricultural College in the fall of 1913. Born on a farm in Simcoe County, Ontario, where he spent the early part of his life, he attended a rural public school, Orangeville High School, and later Trinity University, Toronto, from which he graduated with First Class Honors in Physical and Natural Science, winning the Governor-General’s medal for highest standing in this department. After graduation Mr. Lee worked as a science teacher. He moved west in 1903 to the prairies, where he continued to teach and to advocate for more practical educational courses to promote progress in Manitoba’s rural communities. “His early experience on the farm, together with his familiarity with conditions on the prairies, and his excellent attainments in the technical and practical knowledge of his work” especially prepared him for this role. Since the Manitoba Agricultural College also emphasised the need for the development of practical skills in its young farm students, Mr. Lee’s appointment was a perfect fit.
