Herner, Prof. Milton C. Herner, B.S.A., Head, Poultry Husbandry, Main Floor, Poultry Building.
Prof. Herner graduated in the spring of 1911 from the Ontario Agricultural College [O.A.C.], Guelph, and almost immediately took a position in the Poultry Department there. However, in the fall, he decided to move west and join the staff of M.A.C. as Chair of Poultry, which had just become a separate department. The M.A.C. Gazette, provided a brief biography of the professor, shortly after his arrival at the college.
Hailing from Waterloo, Ont., Mr. Herner has been actively engaged in the poultry industry since his early years. In January, 1901, he attended the first short course in stock and seed judging held at the O.A.C. In January, 1907, he took the regular short course in poultry raising, and in September of the same year entered with the class ’11. During the course he spent considerable time at outside work such as institute work or judging and lecturing at Fall fairs or poultry shows.
Mr. Herner has an enviable reputation as a poultry breeder and judge. For ten years previous to his entering College as a regular student, he was a successful breeder of exhibition Barred Rocks. At the Boston Poultry Show, last January, he considerably enhanced his reputation as a judge by his splendid work. He is, moreover, a keen judge of horses, having attained premier honors along that line on two occasions.
Professor Herner quickly gained “the respect and confidence of both the faculty and the students,” whose opinion was that he “knew the poultry business from the beginning to the end.” Since the poultry industry was in its infancy in Manitoba, the Gazette felt the Province had been fortunate in securing a man of such ability and worth to head the Department of Poultry” at M.A.C.
