Hemming, Miss Kate, Director of Music
According to The M.A.C. Gazette, “Miss Kate Hemming was born in London, and studied at the Royal Academy of Music. Here her study of all branches of her art, singing, pianoforte, harmony and elocution, was carried on under the guidance of the most noted teachers. While still at the R.A.M., Sir Augustus Harris made her an offer in grand opera, but she preferred the concert platform. Her study of music was also carried on in Leipzig, Germany. Her association with such well known musicians as Sir Henry J. Wood, Mr. Geo. Henschell, Sir John Stainer and others, has much to do in developing her musical ability. In England she sang at the Royal Albert Hall, at the Imperial Institute, etc., and before various members of the Royal Family. She was engaged by Dr. Borden to come to Mount Allison College, N.B., where she stayed two years, going from there to Montreal, where she taught privately for four years. Last year, while touring the West, she decided to settle in Winnipeg, and has this year been appointed Director of Music at the Agricultural College. Under her leadership a choral class and choir have been organized, both of which have splendid prospects for their work this winter.”
