Blackstock, Mr. Adna Lewis, B.S.A. (1913), Lecturer, Extension Department (1913-1915), Main Floor, Administration Building.
A native of Gladstone, Manitoba, Mr. Blackstock obtained a teachers’ certificate before he began farming in the Battleford district in 1906. For the next four years, he successfully operated a grain and stock farm during the summer and attended M.A.C. during the winter. While at the college, he was very active, being “president of each literary society in turn, president of third year, and in fourth year President of the Student Body.” He also excelled as a practical stockman who shone during stock judging competitions at Brandon and Chicago. However, he left college before completing his degree and during the winter of 1910-11 taught short courses in Saskatchewan for the College of Agriculture. In the summer of 1911, he “was appointed to the examiners board under the new Horse Breeders Act in Saskatchewan and acted as Deputy Live Stock Commissioner.” While in this capacity, he “selected and brought west 10 car loads of high grade dairy cattle, to be distributed over the province at cost.” He also became a seasoned stock judge, having judged at nearly eighty Saskatchewan “stallion shows and summer fairs.” Mr. Blackstock completed his agricultural degree in the spring of 1913 and assumed duties as a lecturer in the Extension Department of M.A.C. in the fall. Undoubtedly, his practical field experience and agricultural training were major considerations in his appointment.
